40 of them came in June, the most active month of the year so far.  Generally, these were more diverse and smaller than in previous months, with the exception of Reynolds’ $4.5 billion acquisition of Graham Packaging.

11 were in alcohol, 8 in soft drinks, 4 in dairy, 4 in packaging and 3 in ingredients.

The United States dominated, with 11 all US deals, 8 international purchases and 3 sales abroad.  The United Kingdom followed with involvement in 8 transactions.  Next came France on 3, with 24 other countries playing a role in 1 or 2.

But they included two enormous transactions.  Mexican soft drinks bottlers Arca and Contal merged to form a company worth $7 billion and DuPont from the United States completed its $6.4 billion purchase of Denmark’s Danisco ingredients business.  Also of significance were General Mills gaining 51% of Yoplait yogurt and PepsiCo buying the final 13.5% of Russia’s Wimm-Bill-Dann.

5 of the 22 were in food, 4 in alcohol, 4 in dairy, 4 in soft drinks and 3 in ingredients.

As almost always, the United States was the most active on 9, followed by the United Kingdom on 5.  Denmark was the biggest seller on 4.  Just 16 countries were involved in May’s dealings.

Rather less than previous months this year, but almost one a day.

14, exactly half, involved the United States, 10 being entirely US based.  France was the next most active country on 5, then China on 3.  The overall spread stretched across 15 countries.

Alcohol led the way in April, with 10 transactions.  Second was packaging on 5.  Dairy was third on 4, followed by soft drinks and ingredients on 3 each.

There were two big deals – Silgan’s US takeover of Graham Packaging for $4.1 billion and Diamond Foods’ purchase of the Pringles brand for $2.35 billion.

The full list is available in a searchable database by clicking here.

Of which 39 were in March, featuring 10 in alcohol, 10 in soft drinks, 7 in services, 6 in dairy and 6 elsewhere.

The March tally included a broader cross section of countries than normal, with 2 in Austria, 2 in Ethiopia, 2 in Israel and 3 in Canada.  The biggest contributors were the United States on 14, France and Italy on 6 each, then the Netherlands and the United Kingdom on 4 each.

The biggest of the month was General Mills’ purchase of a 50% stake in Yoplait yogurt from PAI Partners for €800 million.

And 81 have been recorded so far this year in the new searchable online acquisitions database at madb.zenithinternational.com.

February’s biggest was Diageo’s spirits purchase of Mey Içki in Turkey for £1.3 billion.

Alcohol accounted for 13 of the February total, soft drinks 8, dairy 7, food 5 and packaging 3.

28 countries were affected, with the United States involved in 11, France and Japan in 4, China, South Africa and the United Kingdom in 3.  17 were single country transactions and 19 across borders.

Now that bevblog is covering more than one food or drink acquisition every day, we’ve created a new searchable database that goes live today.  Just click here to find it.

I’ll carry on providing monthly summaries, but the database will be continuously updated, so you can check it at any time.

I recorded 36 deals in January including two over $1 billion – Danisco going for $6.3 billion and Smurfit-Stone for $3.5 billion.

10 were alcohol, 7 in ingredients, 7 in soft drinks, 5 in general food and 4 in dairy.

14 were within individual countries and 22 across borders.  11 involved the United States, mainly as a purchaser; 7 touched on the United Kingdom, weighted more as a seller; 5 affected China and 4 impacted on Germany.

The database already notes 26 more purchases in February.  Do let me know if I’ve missed anything important.

It was a massive year end for mergers and acquisitions in food and drink, with 50 transactions recorded for December so far and at least three in excess of $1 billion.

The biggest was PepsiCo’s bid for 66% of Russia’s Wimm-Bill-Dann at $3.8 billion, followed by Ardagh’s packaging purchase of Impress for €1.7 billion and DSM’s ingredients deal with Martek for $1.1 billion. There were also three notable dairy mergers with Arla gunning for Hansa in Germany, Sodiaal swallowing Entremont in France and two Brazilian dairies combining to form Lacteos Brasil with $1.8billion sales.

12 of the 50 were in dairy, 8 in food, 8 in soft drinks, 7 in alcohol, 6 in ingredients and 6 more in packaging.

30 were single country transactions, 20 crossing national borders. 20 involved the United States, followed by the UK on 5, Brazil and Australia on 4, then Canada, France and Ireland on 3.
